The Chronicles of Old Salem June 25, 1914 The greatest disaster in Salem's history descends as fire breaks out in the Korn Leather Company's factory on Boston Street near Bridge Street in Blubber Hollow. The temperature had hovered in the 90's for days, without rain. Within moments the conflagration is beyond control. Despite every effort, it is thirteen hours before the flames are finally conquered on the evening of June 26th at the corner of Derby and Herbert Streets. The story of the near-destruction of Salem can best be told in statistics: Area devastated, 252 acres; streets wiped out entirely 51, partially 48; families rendered homeless about 3500; estimated number of individuals homeless and destitute of possessions, 15,000; additional persons whose employment was affected, 3000; buildings of all kinds destroyed 1,800, including 41 factories, 400 places of business. Loss by fire $13,726,533; taxable property lost to city $5,300,000; trees destroyed 594; curbstones destroyed -nine miles; number of cities and towns which sent help 22; military companies on duty after the fire, 26, together with many hundred police from Boston and Essex County. June 26. The French inhabitants who were burned out of their homes hold an impressive mass at Forest River Park where a camp is erected for the homeless. There is a food depot at the armory and the Relief Committee votes $100,000 to aid people in rebuilding. By November 13, it is estimated 15,000,000 feet of lumber is imported, 20,000 barrels of cement, and huge quantities of lime. The lumber is handled by three local firms Pitman & Brown, N.P. Gifford, J.P. Landmaid & Sons.
